Solid or engineered treads - it depends on what's below
Solid oak or hickory treads are the traditional choice and sand down beautifully over the years. Engineered treads are the better fit when you're matching an existing engineered floor, or when the stair structure itself sits on or near a concrete landing - they're dimensionally stable and less prone to the seasonal creak solid wood can develop.

How the job actually goes
Day one is demo and prep - removing whatever's currently on the stairs, checking the stringers for movement, and shimming anything loose so the new staircase doesn't announce itself with a creak. Day two is installing treads, risers, and nosings with construction adhesive and finish nails, no visible fasteners. Day three is stain (when requested) and finish coats.
Matching your stairs to the rest of the floor
Most homeowners want the staircase to read as a continuation of the room it connects to, not a separate project bolted on afterward. We work from the same stain batch used on your hardwood or engineered hardwood flooring and the same sheen, so the transition disappears. If you'd rather go with a deliberate contrast - dark treads with painted white risers is popular right now - we'll mock that up on a sample board before ordering anything.

Hardwood Stairs - frequently asked questions
In most cases, yes. We strip whatever's currently on the stairs down to the treads, inspect them, and go from there. Solid treads in good shape get built on directly; damaged or particleboard treads get replaced as part of the job.
A standard 14-stair job runs 2 to 3 days start to finish - demo, install, then finish coats. You can use the stairs the next morning, with full cure in about a week.
That's the goal on most jobs. We bring stain samples to your home and brush them onto a piece of the same wood species before you commit, so you're seeing the actual color on actual wood.
Our own crew handles it start to finish. Stairs are detail-heavy work, and we'd rather have the people who install your floors also cut and finish your treads.
